Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects an individual’s cognitive and social functioning on a variety of levels. It is often presented through difficulty in understanding social behavior and stunted communicative development. Autism Spectrum Disorder can also yield comorbid disorders such as anxiety and depression. While there is no cure or direct medicinal treatment for this disorder, different therapy models aid in managing the symptoms that accompany it, and further strengthen cognitive and social abilities.

However, for many on the spectrum, conceptualization of proper social behavior or communication and situational understanding is a large struggle.Traditional therapy routes may pose difficulty yielding progress in patients with autism because of these developmental barriers. It is because of this, that some individuals might not particularly benefit from being placed in institutional or clinical settings.

A particularly unique and immersive therapy model that can combat this dilemma is art therapy. This form of treatment is an interactive and intimate experience that allows the patient to fully express and understand their thoughts and emotions through the utilization of an artistic medium. More specifically, art therapy has no rules or restrictions in terms of artistic ability, thus allowing the patient full creative control to present their issues in a physical interpretation that then allows for better understanding between the patient and therapist.

In essence, art therapy merges traditional therapy with the mentally pleasing element of creating something from within. In terms of addressing more specific issues regarding Autism Spectrum Disorder like sensory overload or compulsive behaviors, art therapy utilizes specific mediums of art such as coloring, painting, photo collage and sculpting to regulate these behaviors to a manageable level. An example of this would be having a child with a compulsive hair picking issue, pull apart clay. Once the clay is seperated, the child can proceed to create a sculpture or art mold. The learning goal in the context of this child, is to understand that the stimulating sensation they long for can be redirected to an artistic medium to create something wonderful. This method embraces behaviors rather than eliminating them. While it is not the most traditional treatment route, art therapy is a recognized and viable option. Whether someone possesses an artistic ability or not, the practice of art therapy is there to connect creativity and cultivation in the terms of self-improvement.
