The field of art therapy encompasses the integration of skill-based arts, creative processes, psychological theory, and the exploration of human experience within the context of a psychotherapeutic relationship. Professional art therapists facilitate art therapy in such a way that is effective for individuals and communities. Cognitive and sensorimotor functions are improved through art therapy, as are self-esteem, self-awareness, emotional resilience, insight, social skills, conflicts, and distress are reduced and resolved, and societal and ecological change is promoted.
But I am not an artist, can art therapy still help me?
Yes! Art therapy is just as important and helpful as any other form of therapy, regardless of artistic sense. Rather than focusing on how good your art is, art therapy aims to focus on what you experience along the way. The benefits of art therapy are universal, regardless of whether you draw stick figures, doodle, use acrylic paint, or create a masterpiece. It’s a process, and it’s all about you.
