Moves For Your Mind: Using Dance Therapy to Cope with Covid Anxiety

September 4, 2020

In the midst of the current environment that most are reduced to inhabiting due to COVID-19 related shutdowns, it is unfortunately easy to develop or worsen anxiety in individuals. Due to the nature of being sheltered indoors, and therapeutic services now being administered virtually, it is difficult to feel any comfort or security. This does not mean, however, that there are no more options beyond traditional therapy models such as talk and cognitive behavioral therapy. Alternative therapies based in the dance category can greatly achieve the same results while also adding an interactive and hands-on approach.

While it may be intimidating in theory, no professional training or expertise is required to utilize dance therapy to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety disorders. The goal is to express your inner conflict and emotions through body movement to achieve a sense of improvement in terms of managing this disorder. Dance therapy is an all inclusive model that serves as safe space for those who are unable to communicate their thoughts and emotions fully through verbal usage. It is especially helpful in calming anxious stimming, a repetitive self-stimulating behavior such as pacing, leg shaking, running in place, etc. These behaviors usually result from sensory overload or a heightened state of anxiety in an attempt to self heal, however in most cases it is difficult to do so in a closed setting such as those presented in terms of self-isolating during COVID-19.

When applying the guidance of a trained professional and physically moving along with a group or individually, there is a sense of fellowship that brings positivity and progress in one’s self recovery. Biologically, the impact of body movement in correlation with endorphins, also known as neurotransmitters, is usually positive in that a euphoric and positive stimuli response is sent throughout the body providing energy and a heightened mood. As previously mentioned, dance therapy is not completely restricted to a certain type of dance or performative skill, it is based on the creative use of body movement to express and cope with the emotions from within. It serves the multi-purpose of a therapeutic technique and exercise regimen, which ultimately boosts your health on a physical and mental level.

In the uncertain times we are facing, it seems as though it is impossible to be heard or seen. Even when we are putting the effort to stay strong, it is a struggle to achieve any semblance of normalcy in these times of isolation and virtual care services. This does not have to be the case as joining virtual work out groups with friends and relatives, scheduling a dance therapy appointment, or even going for a rhythmic walk can bring brightness into the bleak anxiousness that is occurring. When words cannot sway emotion, the movement from your body can medicate the mind.
