Parenting Styles and Their Differences

Parenting is a difficult thing to master. To some parents, it comes easier and to some it can be a lot to handle. The thing about parenting is that it is not something you can just put on hold and do another time just because you are tired. Parenting is an everyday thing. It is a job that never stops. Different parents also have different parenting styles ranging from very lenient to drastically controlling. The four main types of parenting styles are permissive, authoritative, neglectful, and authoritarian. The first type is permissive. Permissive parenting is when the parent gives the child little to no rules, does not nurture the child and neglects the child’s emotional and behavioral needs. This style is not very effective and can cause children to be lost in guidance since the adult acts more as a friend than a parent. Authoritative parenting is when the parent works with the child when they have a problem, does enforce rules with understanding, and communicates with the child in a healthy way. This style can strengthen the child and parent’s relationship in a good way and give the child good discipline. Neglectful parenting is the non-involvement of the parent in their child’s life. They tend to not form close relationships with their children and do not really care about building one and they let their children fend for themselves. Lastly, authoritative parenting is when the parents’ demands are very high. They do not take into consideration their child’s emotional and behavioral needs and just focus on their feelings and wants. These parents usually have a very poor relationship with their child and the child can become rebellious and resentful towards their parents. It is important to have a good relationship with your child and to take into consideration their feelings and wants. Taking into consideration their brain chemistry and their stage in life can help a parent see the child’s point of view.
