As times become harder and more confusing, the impact of these struggles can lead to the worst for some facing intensive personal battles. Seeking help when living through these difficult experiences can even be more of a battle than before with the new state of our lives in a pandemic. However, it is important to remember that help does not have one face; it is everywhere in different forms catered to each individual’s needs.
For many who experience depression, suicidal thoughts, and tendencies, traditional therapy in a medical-based setting may not cater to the empathetic needs of the individual. After all, it is important for those who receive treatment for this specific issue to have an empathetic approach as this is a highly sensitive and vulnerable moment in their life. The formality of medical towers and institutions can be daunting as it can often
evoke feelings of stigma and even trauma in some cases.
While some of those institutions are necessary in terms of medication and clinical observation, there are other avenues of therapy that provide effective suicide prevention and treatment. Art therapy in particular is a non-traditional method that offers a safe and comfortable space for those affected by suicidal thoughts and tendencies to connect and transcend their emotions from their mind to a canvas
A unique aspect that presents itself in art therapy is the use of sensory art and images with common therapeutic techniques in a setting that almost mimics creating art with a peer or family member, therefore adding a sense of familiarity and security. An example of how the utilization of art therapy aids in suicide prevention and treatment is in the case of self-harm. Incidences of self-harm are greatly prevalent in those who experience depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Self-harm presents itself as either cutting one’s skin using razor blades, burning, and enacting reckless activities as an outlet for the feelings that are encompassed in a depressive and suicidal state. Art therapy can replace the action of self-harm by having the individual engage in sensory art forms such as sculpting, clay formation, and collage. This positive association can then transcend into other concepts such as art as a form of socialization or boosting self-esteem.
The topic of suicide is difficult and uneasy, however, it is a saddening reality for most people. It is the 10th leading cause of death of those living in the United States and as of 2018, the rate has increased by 35%. It is important to take the time to talk to someone you may think is having thoughts or contemplations of suicide before it is too late. Should you or a loved one experience any trauma or suicidal contemplation, the National Suicide Hotline is available 24 hours and reachable through the number 1-800-273-8255 where there is someone readily available to provide necessary support.
