Childhood is the foundation on which a person will build their life. Experiences in childhood affect lifelong learning, behavior, and health, both physical and mental. These negative experiences have an impact on the kid’s life, including mental disorders, additions, and related issues. Child abuse and neglect is a silent pandemic that affects millions of children across the world. In a study made by Child Help “every year more than 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies involving more than 6.6 million children”. The United States is among the worst records within industrialized nations. On average, in the U.S. four to seven children are lost to child abuse and neglect. How can we identify child abuse and neglect? And in the case of encountering a child who is suffering through this, how can we help?
Recognizing signs of child abuse and neglect might save the child’s life. Here are 7 signs to look for that could mean child neglect and abuse:
· Low self-esteem.
· Difficulty regulating emotions.
· Inability to ask for or accept help or support from others.
· Heightened sensitivity to rejection.
· Lack of language for describing feelings.
· Dissociative tendencies.
· Shame or guilt around emotions.
Please remember, it is always advised to talk to a professional in case you think a child is being abused or neglected and seek professional help. If you or someone you know suspects of a child being abused or neglected, there are numerous hotlines and people to call and communicate with for help. Contacting your local child protective services office or law enforcement agency as well as calling or texting 1.800.4.A.CHILD (1.800.422.4453), a hotline that communicates you with professional crisis counselors that are available 24/7.
