For some individuals, they feel as if their world is getting smaller as they age. In some instances, people are fine with a small world, though early research as stated otherwise. These people testify that they have grown aware of their mental and physical aging, so to focus on themselves, they prefer to stay inside, away from others. Instead of encouraging individuals to become more social, some psychologists push them towards a smaller world. This article will discuss reasons as to why this method might work for those who find themselves getting older.
There is a sense of freedom that comes with a smaller world. For instance, you can control how much you eat, sleep, and socialize, without the influence of others. Without the presence of others, you can also spend more of your time doing activities that you actually enjoy doing, instead of filling in the day with many people. Whether it’s watching movies, reading, talking on the phone, you have the freedom to engage in pleasurable activities.
In a smaller world, you do not have to waste energy on unimportant events, such as forcing yourself to go out or addressing new problems. This way, you can spend your energy doing something better for yourself. On the other hand, you will also start to notice your supportive and forgiving friends who are allowing you to take this time for yourself.
If you would like to shrink your world, be more cautious for what you say yes to. This means being aware when you are about to agree to making plans with someone you are not very fond with. Instead, try to be courageous and say no to plans that you don’t think will be good for you. Your supportive friends will forgive and understand your reasons. You can also keep track of activities that yield more unpleasurable feelings than the amount of energy you put into it. For instance, you might enjoy going to the pool, but it is a far drive, too hot, and too crowded. To keep your activities balanced, try looking for a closer pool or going to a friend’s pool instead. Engage in more activities that have an equal pleasure-to-pain ratio and think about the activities that make you feel good. Be sure to make time for events that you have been meaning to take part of, even if they are simple chores around the house. This is your way towards a simple livelihood.
Although this might not be for everyone, a simple life just might be what you are needing if you find yourself aging. The first step is becoming aware of your state in life and, then, figuring out what you need to do next. Keep in mind that the simple life is not isolating yourself, but it means doing activities that benefit you and not worrying about anything else.
