Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder: What is the difference?

It is safe to say there are many different types of mental health disorders that have been studied and diagnosed such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Clinical Depression. These disorders all differ from each other in many ways and are sometimes easily distinguishable from each other. But there are two mental health disorders that are often confused for one another: Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. These two disorders have very similar symptoms but are in different categories. Bipolar disorder is a disorder that affects the mood while Borderline Personality is a personality disorder. Bipolar Disorder, also called manic depression, is a fluctuation of periods of depression that can last from days to months. Bipolar Disorder can be triggered by many things in life such as loss of a loved one, physical illness, and loss of a relationship. Research suggests that Bipolar Disorder can be genetically passed on meaning if a family member has the disorder, then one’s chances of having BP is higher. Borderline Personality Disorder is a pattern of sudden changes in mood, relationships, behavior and self-image. There is no real cause but things that can contribute to forming BPD are being neglected as a child, being a victim of sexual or emotional abuse, and having been exposed to fear or stress a s a child. It is important that someone with disorders gets help due to People with BP and BPD have a higher risk of thoughts of suicide.
