The short answer is, of course! If their relationship needs some work, same-sex couples are welcome to see a couple’s therapist. There is, however, no guarantee that all couples’ therapists will be a good fit for you. There are such sting as couple therapists who may not be qualified to fully understand the strains and struggles that same-sex couples go through. Any relationship, including same-sex relationships, can benefit from couples therapy. It is natural for any relationship to have times when communication breaks down, so having a therapist trained to work with LGBT couples can assist a couple in rediscovering their passion for one another. Not all therapists are a good match for gay couples, and it is important to research the therapist’s specific training in working with couples, especially those with additional training in working with same-sex couples.

What are some issues that same-sex couples may face?

Couples of the same sex share many similarities with heterosexual couples. Despite similarities in their day-to-day activities, the social context in which they live is quite different, largely due to influences of the dominant heterosexual culture and traditional expectations of gender roles within a relationship.

The lack of everyday supports in the lives of many same-sex couples can cause extreme stress – for example, economic, legal, religious, and social support. The members of same-sex couples have experienced societal discrimination in different ways and have dealt with it internally in different ways, but the impact of “minority stress,” or the effects of living with often negative social conditions, always persists. Even in a sometimes hostile climate, many same-sex relationships survive and remain as stable as cohabitating heterosexual couples. That is a testament to the resiliency of the individuals involved.

It is normal for relationships to experience conflict from time to time. The way you handle it, however, is what makes the difference between a healthy, lasting relationship and one that ends bitterly. Keeping trouble at a minimum begins with being aware of potential issues and talking them through before they escalate.
