Deciding to seek out therapy is a large step in the journey to bettering one’s self and taking care of your mental health. It is a simple process for some, for others, it is a trial and error of trying different techniques and methods. This is not to be looked down upon as making sure the right therapy model fits your specific needs is crucial in the context of the mental health recovery and growth process.
Many ask, “Well isn’t searching for therapy a google click away?” While in technical terms that is indeed an aspect of the search process, it is not the only mode of search for some who have a preference for personal touches and thrive off of certain environments. Especially during a pandemic, it can be difficult finding a therapist that does home visits or a face to face environment. However, it is not impossible to find the right therapy for you. While it is a tedious process, narrowing down a search based on your needs will ultimately pay off in the long run for your mental and physical health. Methods or strategies that better help simplify and organize a search for a mental health professional and service include.
Write Down Your Needs
Assessing what you need treatment for, and what is bringing you to therapy is a great start to finding the best therapy for you. After all, this is something that is meant to help and benefit you. Sitting down and creating mind maps with what you feel is affecting you physically, mentally, and emotionally will better help organize your thoughts and guide you towards inquiring about the corresponding services.
Research The Best Therapy Techniques Used To Treat Your Mental Health Needs
There are multiple therapy methods and techniques that can be used to treat many disorders and mental health issues. However, some techniques work a bit better with certain health needs such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. An important thing to note here is that therapy is not one size fits all. Do not be afraid to explore other avenues that may appeal more to your personality and preference. Alternative therapy routes such as art, dance, and drama therapy are also wonderful options that offer an immersive and hands-on experience that work just as well as traditional therapy routes.
Contact The Office or Organization
When finding therapists, programs, or organizations that provide a therapy model that suits and interests you, contacting them via phone or email to learn more is highly recommended. Since everyone’s situation socioeconomically, financially, culturally, and mentally is different it is important to ensure that you are able to have all needs met and be able to receive care that is within your reach. This is always an intimidating aspect of seeking treatment for multiple reasons, a large one being the fear of the preferred provider not being able to meet external needs. These would include: not accepting your insurance, lack of sliding scale fees, or their appointments are offered during a nonoptimal time. Although this
fear is very real and valid, it should not deter first time or returning therapy patients from seeking help. Should a situation, such as the ones mentioned, arise, it is always okay to ask for references to a provider that can and will meet your needs. Ensuring that you are taken care of to the fullest extent is important and should not be compromised. There is help out there for everyone.
The road to recovery is not an easy one to follow. There will be obstacles and detours along the way, as there is in everyday life and while it may seem that it is impossible to find the perfect therapist or the ideal practice, the search is very much worth all the work being put in and you will very much see the benefits reflected in your mental health care.
