My Partner and I have been having some problems. What is couple/relationship therapy?

Although couples are increasingly accepting of therapy, sometimes they still refuse to seek therapy together. Couples with a wide range of problems, conflicts, and issues may benefit from relationship counseling. Life can be overwhelming even for the happiest and healthiest individuals. A commitment relationship between one half and the other is sometimes full of ups and downs. It is when the hard times weight down on the relationship when one should be able to recognize the problems and seek help.

What are some problems that can be included in relationship therapy?

  • intimacy and trust-building
  • communication skills
  • money issues
  • sexual concerns
  • marriage counseling
  • premarital counseling
  • vlearning to express feelings so others really hear you
  • dealing with an affair
  • feelings of anger and betrayal
  • deciding to break-up or break through
  • problems with adult children
  • issues arising from previous relationships
  • blended family issues – “his children/my children/our children”
  • working through midlife crisis
  • spiritual or religious differences
  • stress due to time, money, work: the “not enough time for us” syndrome

What are some benefits to couple/relationship therapy?

Conflicts can be resolved through relationship counseling, including those rooted deeply and longstanding. Counseling couples can be an extremely challenging experience since it requires a great deal of time and effort from both the counselor and the couple. However, the therapy method that we use here in Therapy by Angelina significantly eases the process for everyone involved. Here are some areas that benefit from this kind of therapy:

  • Improving communication skills between two people
  • Discovering the root causes of major points of conflicts
  • Creating better understanding
  • Encouraging better acceptance of one another
  • Restoring emotional and physical intimacy
  • Decreasing emotional detachment or avoidance
  • Restoring emotional strength and building relationship resilience
  • Restoring lost trust between a couple
