A person who abuses substances such as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, prescription medications, and others may suffer serious health problems and have serious problems with family, friends, coworkers, a job, money, and the law. However, people continue to use the substance despite these problems. An addiction is a physical dependence on a chemical substance. As a result of dependence, when a person quits using a substance, they experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Initially, a substance that leads to addiction is often pleasurable. However, this pleasure has far dwindled once addiction established itself. A need to avoid unpleasant withdrawal symptoms is the driving force behind continued use.
