What is Trauma?

August 26, 2019

As many might know, past trauma can follow you for years, even when we do not realize it. It is important to have a clear understanding of what trauma is because, sometimes, we experience traumatic events without even realizing or processing them.

So, what is trauma? Psychological trauma is the degradation of adaptive abilities in response to an event that was perceived as threatening. Such events can range from being a victim of a natural disaster to witnessing domestic violence as a child. Trauma can also present itself as guilt, fear, anger, bodily change, and can also affect social relationships. Though there is not one way to process trauma, there are several therapeutic options when one decides to seek help.

If you have not already found yourself in a supportive environment, a therapist can provide that for you. Building a relationship with your therapist involves trusting them and, in return, you feel safe and cared for.

Your therapist can then create a path for your healing journey. This may involve traditional “talk” therapy, art therapy, dance and movement therapy, or several other options. However, it is important to keep in mind that healing from trauma is a process, and there is not one way to overcome it.
