Chronic stress can result from long-term experiences that lead to a stress addiction. This may cause a dependence on stress hormones or stressful situations. There are several signs that you may be dependent on the feelings you get from stress:

  • Engaging in behaviors that may be harmful or have unintended consequences
  • Engaging in stressful activities or putting yourself in stressful situations
  • Boredom unless you’re stressed
  • Interested in drama and seeking it out
  • Despite experiencing physical symptoms or other issues related to stress, continuing to put yourself in stressful situations

You might also encounter the following:

  • When you wish you had said “no” instead of “yes”
  • Lack of self-care and time spent keeping yourself healthy
  • Feeling physical pains (e.g., back or neck pain)
  • Not being able to recall the last time you weren’t stressed

Addiction and stress can also share similar physical symptoms, such as:

  • Hypertension
  • Tired both mentally and physically
  • Sleep problems or insomnia
  • Symptoms of withdrawal

How can I stop my stress addiction?

Is it possible to manage or overcome a stress addiction? Yes, you can change your behavior. Although therapy is the best way to approach your addiction, there are other way you can treat it. These include:

  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Meditation or mindfulness practice
  • A regular self-care routine
  • Setting boundaries that promote a more well-balanced life
  • Joining support groups
