The Ofrenda Ritual: Bridging Art and Death

Watch the Documentary

What if grief were not something to overcome, but something to honor?

Produced as part of Dr. Angelina H. Rodriguez's doctoral dissertation in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute, The Ofrenda Ritual: Bridging Art and Death explores the use of the ancient Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos and ofrenda-making in the treatment of complicated grief.

Combining Jungian depth psychology, expressive arts, cultural ritual, and qualitative research, the documentary follows participants as they create personal altars honoring loved ones who have died. Through ritual artmaking, storytelling, symbolic objects, photographs, and communal witness, the film explores how creativity and ritual can provide meaningful pathways for mourning, remembrance, and emotional healing.

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate"
- Carl Jung

Viewed through a depth-psychological lens, the research examines how image, symbolism, and cultural traditions can help individuals engage with grief in ways that traditional verbal approaches may not fully reach, creating opportunities for connection, meaning-making, and transformation.
The documentary represents the convergence of the central themes that have shaped Dr. Angelina's life's work: grief, ritual, creativity, symbolism, and the enduring relationship between memory and healing. It remains one of the foundational expressions of her work as a Jungian psychotherapist, board-certified art therapist, researcher, and educator.
